I hear Vaudeville may come from the expression "voice of the city" or "songs of the town," which certainly seems to fit, here. Colourful, crowded, chaotic, much like a city (or the theatre genre too!), with people seemingly at the heart. I'm not great at interpreting non-literal paintings, but that's what I saw! I very much like this one, too.
